Bryce Mitchell fails on 3 submission attempts: The Twister
Bryce Mitchell (12-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) vs Charles Rosa (12-3 MMA, 3-3 UFC)
Bryce Mitchell fails to submit Charles Rosa at UFC 249
Having pulled off a Submission of the Year twister to cap 2019, a lot of eyes are on Arkansas native Bruce Mitchell to start his 2020 campaign. The TUF veteran had a tough match-up at UFC 249, however, in the gritty Charles Rosa.
Mitchell, who entered the night a perfect 12-0, was putting his undefeated record on the line in this featherweight scrap.
Jiu Jitsu Black Belt Charles Rosa
Bryce Mitchell has been mentioned as a future Featherweight contender and he did not disappoint anyone from the start of Round 1. Mitchell put on a submission clinic and transitioned from submission to submission with ease. Charles Rosa showed his toughness and held on through multiple head and arm chokes and several rare twister submission attempts. Hands down Mitchell displayed some of the most impressive grappling I have seen in years earning himself a dominant unanimous decision victory over a durable and tough Charles Rosa.
Rosa defends the Twister submission
Make no mistake about it Charles Rosa is tough and with stood an all-out grappling assault from Bryce Mitchell. Surviving the fight and not being submitted was an accomplishment for Rosa as most anyone else would have been submitted in his place. Bryce “Thug Nasty” Mitchell is a contender in the Featherweight division and is a treat to watch. The scariest part about “Thug Nasty” is he only a few years in to his career and will get better each fight.
Mitchell fails second attempt at the Twister
Bryce Mitchell was the one who took the center of the Octagon first, backing Rosa to the cage. Mitchell drove in with a takedown and got Rosa to the canvas. Mitchell established an arm triangle grip and had it deep with a half guard position. He eventually jumped to mount, allowing Rosa to spin out of the choke, giving Mitchell his back.
The window was there for Mitchell and he took advantage. Mitchell nearly pulled off his second consecutive twister attempt, but Rosa was fortunately able to spin out of it. Rosa then found himself on the wrong end of another arm triangle, but was able to last to the end of the first round.
Bryce Mitchell unable to submit Charles Rosa
Charles Rosa came out firing kicks at Mitchell, but one was caught and he was on his back again. Like the first round, Mitchell went to the arm triangle and was enjoying a dominant performance. Rosa desperately tried to grab hold of a leg, but came up empty as Mitchell attempted yet again another arm triangle.
Rosa decided to give Mitchell his back. Instead of finishing the fight with a rear naked choke or an arm bar, Mitchell again sought to secure the elusive twister as time expired in the second round.
Third attempt to submit with the Twister fails
Rosa threw a few punches then a wheel kick that Mitchell drove right through into a takedown. He happened to land in the perfect spot to set up the twister. Mitchell again failed to secure the tap and the finish.
However, rolling from one submission attempt to another submission attempt, Rosa, a black belt in Jiu Jitsu, did not give up. seemed. Many commentators said that he seemed to be out matched. Yet the supposedly dominant Mitchell, who even called himself great after the fight, was unable to finish Jiu Jitsu expert Charles Rosa.
Bryce Mitchell def. Charles Rosa by Unanimous Decision (30-25 x2, 30-24). The path is now clear for Bryce Mitchell. He must step up in competition and face more dangerous opponents. As for Rosa, he defensive skills in Jiu Jitsu served him well and he survives to fight again.
No submission for Bryce Mitchell
